Volunteers featured in the Herald-Republic http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=85 http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=85#comments Wed, 14 Apr 2010 22:07:44 +0000 Webmaster http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=85 The Yakima Valley Trolleys were featured today in the Yakima Herald-Republic. The article focuses on the passion and vision of our volunteers who work hard to keep Yakima’s historic trolleys running. It’s well worth reading the full story here (opens in a new window).

Our operation relies entirely on dedicated volunteers who donate their time. Without them Yakima–and the entire nation–would lose a true historic treasure. If you’d like to help, please consider:

  • Becoming a member. Some members join simply to show their support for the trolleys. Others join to become a part of our passionate team of volunteers.
  • Following us on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.
  • Making a secure online donation through Network for Good.

Thanks!

Man charged in 2005 theft of trolley wire http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=82 http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=82#comments Fri, 19 Feb 2010 14:35:29 +0000 Webmaster http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=82 There are some new developments in the case of the theft of the Yakima Valley Trolleys’ historic overhead running wire. Read the full story in the Yakima Herald-Republic.

The loss of the overhead electrical wire necessitated use of a gas-powered motor-generator unit to traverse some parts of the historic YVT trackage. Our dedicated volunteers are committed to restoring the wire as part of our mission to preserve America’s last intact, early 20th Century interurban electric railway. Thanks to the support of The City of Yakima, Puget Sound Energy, Picatti Brothers Inc. and our outstanding volunteers, we hope to have this restoration complete soon.

The new overhead electrical system incorporates many anti-theft measures so that we can continue the important work of preserving Yakima’s historic, 103-year-old interurban electric railway.

2010 Summer operations along the Pine Street line will begin Memorial Day weekend.

First Halloween Trolley a Spooky Success! http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=69 http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=69#comments Sun, 01 Nov 2009 21:02:34 +0000 gjohnsen http://www.yakimavalleytrolleys.org/news/?p=69 October 31, 2009 we held the first ever Halloween Trolley rides in Yakima! We’re not sure if it was our volunteers or the passengers who had the most fun.

Close to 300 passengers came to take part in an exciting, family-friendly Halloween activity. They were also helping to keep local history alive as 100% of revenue goes directly toward keeping trolleys rolling in Yakima.

Take a look at the photos from the event which we posted on our Facebook page (no Facebook account necessary to view the photos).

We’d also like to express our extraordinary gratitude to Wray’s Food & Drug for donating all 100 pumpkins for the event. Wray’s is a Yakima-owned grocer that believes strongly in supporting the Yakima community. We appreciate everything they do to support us and other community organizations in the area. Thanks, Wray’s!

If you missed the Halloween Trolley (or even if you didn’t) you’ll have to keep an eye on our Events page for details about the 2009 Santa Claus Trolley rides which have become an annual holiday tradition for many Yakima families.
